The Danny Sprinkle Era in Washington basketball kicked off positively, with the Huskies securing their first victory of the 2024-25 college basketball season on Tuesday night. The team relied on the impressive performance of Great Osobor to fend off an upset challenge from the UC Davis Aggies in Seattle. The former Utah State Aggie made his debut for Washington, scoring 15 points on 4-for-8 shooting, along with 17 rebounds, six steals, and two blocks in 38 minutes, leading to a 79-73 triumph.
Following the game, the Huskies announced via social media that Osobor became the first player in a major conference since Blake Griffin’s era at Oklahoma to achieve a stat line featuring at least that many points, rebounds, and steals in a single game.
Osobor is now competing for his third college team, having spent his first two years at Montana State. He transferred to Utah State for the 2023-24 season and played a crucial role in helping the program, then led by Sprinkle, reach the 2024 National Tournament as a No. 8 seed. Osobor contributed to Utah State’s victory over the No. 9 TCU Horned Frogs in the first round before they were eliminated in the second round by Zach Edey and the eventual finalist Purdue Boilermakers.
A native of England, Osobor entered the transfer portal in April and ultimately chose Washington for his senior season. During his time at Utah State, he averaged 17.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, along with 2.8 assists. He also contributed 1.3 steals and 1.4 blocks each outing.
Room for Growth in Washington Basketball
Even with the win against UC Davis, the Huskies recognize there are several areas needing improvement. For starters, they managed to hit only 2-for-14 from three-point range against a team that was considered a 15.5-point underdog by some sportsbooks.
Osobor could have contributed additional points had his free throw shooting not faltered; he only converted on 7 of 16 attempts. He also registered nine turnovers and accumulated four personal fouls, feedback that did not sit well with Sprinkle.
“He knows me and I know him better than anybody and I would say C-minus,” Sprinkle assessed Osobor’s performance after the game, according to Percy Allen of The Seattle Times. “As impressive as his stats were, he missed nine free throws. I’m really proud of his 17 rebounds because he was in there battling.”
