Jeanie Buss Sets The Record Straight On 2020 Lakers Championship Roster

The discussion surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 championship roster continues to be relevant, particularly as the franchise has encountered difficulties matching that level of success in recent years. Former NBA player Dwight Howard played a crucial role in that championship campaign.

In the aftermath of their triumph, the Lakers made several significant trades and opted not to renew some player contracts, including that of their former center. Howard attributed this to the actions of Lakers’ general manager Rob Pelinka. After the Lakers secured the title, Howard signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Recently, Howard revisited the topic during a guest appearance by Lakers owner Jeanie Buss on his podcast, “Above The Rim With DH 12.” He expressed regret over not rejoining the Lakers following the title-winning season.

“I was sad. I wanted to come back, and I don’t know what had happened,” Howard remarked.

“You took an offer from the Philadelphia 76ers,” Buss stated.

Dwight Howard Appeals for Lakers Comeback After Clarifying Departure Misunderstanding

After Jeanie Buss suggested that Dwight Howard was at fault for leaving the team, he noted that there might have been some misunderstanding during his exit. Howard rectified the situation by stating that he was unaware of the Lakers’ available position for him.

“Because what I was told was that you guys didn’t have an offer for me,” Howard explained.

The former Lakers player then amusingly requested Buss to grant him another chance to return to the franchise.

“I’m in shape for basketball, so Jeanie, give me one more chance,” he urged.

Throughout his career, Howard had three separate tenures with the Lakers. After one season with the Philadelphia 76ers, he made a return to Los Angeles for what would be his final stint in the NBA, averaging 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds over the 60 games of the 2021-22 season.
