Social Media Labels Luka Doncic as a “Poor Defender” Following Late Mistake That Allowed Utah Jazz’s Game-Winner

After a promising start to the 2024-25 season, the Dallas Mavericks, who were last season’s NBA Finalists, have suffered four consecutive losses. To enhance their offensive capabilities, they brought in former Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson. However, it was their defensive lapses that led to a defeat against the Utah Jazz on Thursday, prompting fans to criticize Luka Doncic on social media.

Klay Thompson hit a crucial three-pointer late in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 113-113. With under 30 seconds left on the clock, Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson assisted John Collins, who scored his 28th point for the game-winner. Luka Doncic, seemingly distracted by the bench, was positioned at the free-throw line when Collins made the decisive shot. Fans expressed their frustration with Doncic’s lack of vigilance and took to social media to voice their displeasure.

As Doncic looked on in disbelief after Collins scored to put the Jazz ahead, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd addressed the situation in a post-game interview, stating, “Communication. There was a lapse there. It happens, and they took full advantage of it. We need to improve.”

Luka Doncic Accepts Accountability for the Mavericks’ Defeat

The Slovenian guard recorded 37 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds in the loss to the Jazz. In his post-game comments, he acknowledged his role in the defeat, admitting that he was not paying attention when Utah secured the game-winning basket.

I was misunderstanding… we misunderstood the bench. That’s on me,” Doncic stated.

This season, Doncic leads the Mavericks with averages of 29.2 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Currently, the Dallas Mavericks sit at 12th place in the Western Conference with a record of 5-7. Doncic’s defensive struggles could pose significant challenges for the Mavericks moving forward.
